JANUARY 2025 - NORTH SARASOTA UPDATE
Let the year begin! We returned from State Conference ready to go to work for the betterment of
our community. Following up on our planning meeting, we have several activities and
fundraisers planned that will support our scholarship fund and community engagement efforts.
Over the past 40 years, we have presented scholarships and/or book awards to graduating high
school seniors in the Sarasota-Bradenton area.
Our members continue to inspire and serve as role models in our community. Valerie Reeves was
recognized as an “Amazing Woman 2024” by the Suncoast Women of Action, s grassroot
community organization who serves as a vehicle for disseminating information and increasing
awareness in American government. She was recognized at a luncheon on September 21 st .
Valerie serves as our treasurer and nominations committee chair.
In September, we also observed our 52 nd anniversary. North Sarasota was chartered in 1972 by
the Sarasota Business & Professional Women’s Club. In lieu of a monthly meeting, we
celebrated together at the Anna Maria Oyster Bar Landside where members enjoyed dinner in a
relaxed atmosphere. Due to hurricane Milton, we met virtually for our October meeting instead
of in person for the safety of our members.
In keeping with our goal of making a difference, we donated fall goody bags to the students in
the BPW scholarship house on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee. 20 students
received bags filled with hygiene items such as lotion, body wash, shampoo, conditioner,
deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, goat milk personal size lotions; food items such as popcorn,
cookies, trail mix, potato chips, granola bars, miniature candy. North Sarasota members donated
the items for the goody bags. This event was coordinated by Gwen Sermon who worked with
FSU house liaison Imani Sameen. Gwen is vice president of the Education Foundation and is
assisting with programs for the young ladies at the FSU house.
We wish a happy holiday season to all!
